Working in construction since 1997, Angela Rushforth is one of the sector’s most high-profile leaders. As founder of the Construction Inclusion Coalition and managing director of Toolstation, she is dedicated to increasing numbers of female and ethnic minority background staff. Here she shares her expert advice on how to build change in your organisation.
Put down the ladder. Help other women, those from ethnic minority backgrounds and those with disabilities to achieve their potential by mentoring them and making the environment better for them to succeed.
Make stuff happen. If you’re passionate about change, then it’s down to you to make it happen, from promoting inclusion to taking personal accountability. There have been a lot of forums discussing equity, diversity and inclusion in the sector — but action is needed now.
Create a welcoming environment. Everyone needs to feel they belong through the environment and culture we create or they won’t hang around for long.
Allies are important. Those who hold power today need to be supportive and willing to stand up when they see or hear discriminatory behaviour and microaggressions. Help them understand the challenges and give them confidence to be the ‘upstander’.
Find your tribe. I used to avoid women’s networks as I wanted to be seen as a successful business leader, not a female leader. However, I’ve really benefited in confidence and support by being surrounded by other women who are willing to share their experiences.
Be yourself. Don’t be afraid to be yourself with all your quirks and vulnerabilities. You should be able to bring your true self to work, without fear.
